The International Core (IC) has been a key element of the UAB CFAR since 1997 and was historically focused on programs and projects in Zambia and Rwanda. Building on these experiences, the IC has refocused its efforts to initially support the expanded opportunities through the Center for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ). While continuing to build on these efforts, particularly through utilization of other UAB CFAR core activities, the IC seeks and supports other opportunities for international AIDS-related work when appropriate. The mission of the IC is to initiate, facilitate and enhance international AIDS related research activities at UAB.

The International Core utilizes the resources of the central CFAR Administrative offices at UAB for coordinating activities with the Core Director, now housed in Zambia full time. In Zambia, the activities are coordinated through the Center for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ), a nongovernmental organization affiliated with UAB with extensive infrastructure for support of studies and activities.

The Specific Aims of the Core include:

1. To provide scientific leadership and direction for UAB AIDS-related international projects and programs.

2. To provide technical assistance, training, and professional staff development through mentoring programs to ensure the success of CFAR-supported international research programs.

3. To coordinate education and training for students, residents, and fellows interested in working on International Core-supported programs and projects.

4. To provide logistic support to students, fellows, faculty and International Core projects.
